The school's production of a one-act play was one of just eight selected from 244 entries across the state of Texas to compete at the championship level. Since March of this year, drama students at Lewisville High School have competed in five qualifying contests. The most recent was the Region 1 competition, which took place last month in Arlington.
Even if the students don't end up taking home the top prize at the championship on May 28, school officials can use banner printers to honor their achievement. Brad Durio, the head theater director at the high school, told the Lewisville Leader:
“Advancing to the state finals is a very exciting experience, and I am so excited to get to share the experience with such an amazing group of students and teachers.”
During the competition, the students have just seven minutes to set up their props and any needed tech, forty minutes for performance, and another seven minutes to take everything down. The school is putting on a production of ‘The African Company Presents Richard III’, about the first African-American theater company in the U.S.
Individual students from the school also earned recognition for their acting, including several Best Actor and Best Actress awards.
