The City of Lewisville has selected David Iles of Sanger to create public art—he and the city have signed an agreement by which Iles will create a sculpture of Wayne Ferguson, and install it in Wayne Ferguson Plaza in Old Town.
The city council approved a Public Art Master Plan earlier in 2018, and one of the most recommended items was a sculpture of former mayor and councilmember Ferguson. Members of the Ferguson family approached Iles, who operates a studio known as Bolivar Bronze, and who is known for his large-scale sculptures specifically designed to be mounted outdoors.
A rendering of the proposed sculpture reveals that Iles plans to create a statue of Ferguson wearing his favorite hat and boots, sitting on a wall as he studies a map of Ferguson plaza. The sculpture will be placed on a wall bordering the boardwalk, underneath a redbud tree, approximately 50 feet from the Charles Street gateway to the plaza.
On one side of the seated figure, rolled maps will be stacked; on the other, personal items will be piled. The maps represent Ferguson's many projects that benefited Lewisville, while the personal objects, such as spurs and chaps, illustrate his character.
The sculpture should be finished in eight to twelve months, at a cost of about $90,000.
Projects like this can use flyer printing to provide information about the subject to interested residents.
