Houston venue to offer holiday season bird count

A Houston venue that provides habitat for a variety of wildlife will soon be visited by birders from across the area, and they will be engaging in some hands-on wildlife advocacy.

Mercer Botanic Gardens will be the location for a bird survey led by the Houston Audubon society. Christy Jones and Paul Gregg will be taking on the role of survey leaders for this morning event.

The activity will welcome birders of any skill level, but they must be at least 12 years of age. Appropriate clothing, including comfortable walking shoes, are recommended, as is insect repellent, sunscreen, and binoculars.

The group will walk the site’s survey loop, and they can expect to see a wide assortment of species. The venue provides habitats ranging from open grass meadows to cultivated gardens and woods, and it also boasts several water features such as ponds. Guests can take advantage of photo opportunities.

Birding offers an interesting way for the public to become citizen scientists. Groups can encourage this interest by providing items such as species checklists, promotional pens, bird record Books and other materials useful for outdoor activities.

This visit to Mercer Botanic Gardens will begin at 8:00 am on December 28. It will wrap up at 10:00 am, and its facilitators can be contacted through the outing’s online listing.
