Houston brushes up on tree ID basics

A Houston Arboretum and Nature Center program will help members of the public brush up on their tree identification skills.

At least 60 species of trees call the city home, ranging from park and forest trees to ones that do well going along sidewalks and streets. The activity will be geared towards those who are new to tree identification, and they will learn how to use a variety of characteristics to determine the species of a tree.

The class will begin indoors with a discussion of basic tree anatomy, and groups of species most commonly seen in the area will be reviewed. Everyone will find out what characteristics may be helpful identification points in the field. If the weather permits, the attendees will head outdoors so they can get some hands-on experience and put their new knowledge to test. The registrants should wear clothing suitable for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Certified Arborist Rafael Renteria will facilitate the activity.

Having good skills for identifying plants and animals can be valuable to the citizen scientist, and a workshop offers the chance to pick these up. Stationery printers can prepare Copies of handouts that include full color photos and diagrams.

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center will be running its Beginner Tree ID class on Saturday, April 11. Both members and non-members are welcome.
