From the humble grocery store phalaenopsis to exotic species that are just being discovered, a Houston class will introduce orchids to the gardening public.
The Bloom Buddies: Orchids and Companion Plants session will offer an opportunity to gain some insight into the care and culture of these plants. Many are epiphytes, and surprisingly easy to look after, and the activity will provide an opportunity to get some hands-on experience.
Participants will be walked through the steps of repotting an orchid using a special medium, and fertilization and other care advice will be shared. Everyone can ask the facilitator questions, and at the end of the class, they will all go home with a new plant friend to add to their home. The attendees may qualify for CPE (continuing professional education) credits.
Tickets for the workshop start at $60 for members and $80 for non-members. It is for adults only, and all supplies needed are included in the price.
Raising houseplants is a hobby many enjoy, and they may especially appreciate the chance to add some new skills to their toolbox. Learning materials, including ones that incorporate full-color graphics, can be ordered from area Print shops.
Wednesday, February 28 will be the date for this introduction to the care and culture of orchids. It will begin at 6:30 pm at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
