Houston event planned for special needs skaters

Thanks to a Houston event, people with disabilities will be able to get in on the fun of skating next month.

An Inclusive Skate Night will be on offer at Discovery Green, and skaters with developmental and physical challenges will be given full use of the ice. There will be a smaller number of people in attendance than during a typical session, and families are encouraged to participate together.

Attendees who require a mobility device will be able to take their non-motorized wheelchair out onto the ice surface, and those with a disability may participate free of charge. Their family or support person will need to purchase a ticket, and this must be done in person. Ice shoes and double bladed skates will be on offer for anyone who requires them, and food may be purchased. Those who have dietary requirements or need foods prepared in a special way are welcome to bring snacks from home.

To help families prepare for the activity, a social story discussing skating at the Green is available. Print shops can prepare an assortment of materials that may be helpful to the special needs community, such as speech pacing strips, braille signage, and printed versions of safety instructions that may help to make an activity accessible to all.

The ice rink at Discovery Green will be running its inclusive skate night on Tuesday, January 28. More information can be obtained from its website.
