Houston borders to engage in grassroots science

Thanks to a variety of reasons, more people are discovering the joys of becoming so-called “citizen scientists,” and those who call Houston home have been asked to lend a hand with a local ongoing research project.

The Houston Botanic Garden will be conducting a Bird Survey in early September, and the results will be posted to eBird and other nature sites. Mary Anne Morris will be on hand to guide the activity, and those who sign up are asked to meet up at Glenbrook Park.

The group will count the birds they see, and the data will help to indicate the impact recent renovations to the site have had. The listing explained that the location already attracts a diverse range of birds, and with the upgrades, it may become even more attractive. It will be a come and go activity, and while it will take about two hours to complete, the participants can stay for as long as their own personal schedule allows.

Birding provides an opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Species checklists, field guides, information sheets and other learning materials for an event like this will be on offer at local Stationery printers.

The Houston Botanic Garden will be conducting this Bird Survey on September 1. More details about the outing and what to bring can be found on the Houston Audubon website.
