Philadelphia abuzz with beekeeping course

Beekeeping can be an interesting hobby that many may want to try but are not sure how to get started. A series of workshops will take some of the mystery out of apiculture, and it includes membership in The Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild.

The first class will provide an introduction to the art of caring for a hive of bees, and it will be led by experienced beekeepers. The students will learn about the biology of these insects as well as what equipment is needed to successfully manage a hive. After this, there will be a discussion of where to get the bees and how to introduce them to their new home and how to manage it over the first eight weeks.

The second class will build on what was learned in the first, and three hours in the apiary are included in the agenda. In this session, the students will learn how to spot diseases and pests so they can be treated early. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other natural husbandry methods will be taught, and the students will find out how they can change the queen if they need to do so.

The final session will also be split between the classroom and the apiary. This lesson will address harvesting honey, combining hives and making sure he bees make it through the winter. Stationery printers can provide learning materials and other items for this sort of educational event.

These classes, which will provide an introduction to beekeeping, will begin on March 2. They will be taking place in St. James School in Philadelphia, and the cost is $135.
