Local nature center continues tradition in Gibsonia

A memorable day in nature is around the corner in Gibsonia, continuing a long-running tradition where nature enthusiasts and birders can take part in a bird migration census.

The Christmas Bird Count is returning to the Latodami Nature Center in a few weeks, and thousands of volunteers from around the United States will converge to do their part in tallying the birds taking flight. Interested parties are invited to participate in this year’s event, and no experience is necessary to register.

An experienced birder will lead each group of registrants through a carpool or caravan to take up positions in their assigned areas of the park. Participants are encouraged to bring a pair of binoculars, though they are not necessary to volunteer and help. A small number of binoculars will be available for loan to guests who request them. Flyer printing is a low-cost way to promote such events in the community through grassroots marketing efforts.

Group registration is also available, and groups can email Leah Fulton to ensure placement together. Accessible birding is also available at the park for participants in wheelchairs. Registrants are encouraged to dress for the weather.

Participants will meet at North Park Rose Barn in Gibsonia at 8:00 AM on Saturday, December 27. The Bird Count will last for three hours. Registration is required to participate and is open online.
