Doylestown’s Michener Art Museum is hosting a quilt exhibit called ‘Blanket Statements: New Quilts created by Kaffe Fassett’, along with quilts on loan from the Quilt Museum and Gallery in York, UK.
Blanket Statements is made up of 35 pieces, three of which were constructed by Liza Lucy, Corienne Kramer, and Judy Baldwin, who are Bucks County artisans. In addition, under Fassett’s supervision, 10 other quilts were fashioned in the Bucks County area.
Visitors to the Michener Museum can also view a companion exhibit, ‘Pattern Pieces’, which examines how the same patterns, colors, and shapes that appear in ‘Blanket Statements’ can be found in a variety of contemporary art Forms.
Regular museum visitors often bring home mementos from the exhibits they have enjoyed. A postcard printing service allows museums to provide a visual reminder that for this exhibit will be particularly colorful.
A 2013 recipient of the Turner Medal, Fassett has resided in England since the 1960s, although he was raised in San Francisco. Quilt artist Liza Lucy of New Hope enticed Fassett into patchwork quilt design. Previously, he had been known for his choice of bold, vibrant colors in the mediums of needlepoint, mosaics, and knitting.
The exhibit can be viewed at Doylestown’s James A. Michener Art Museum in the following galleries, through February 21. From Doylestown, the exhibition moves on to San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.
