Thanks to a grant from the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center of Bucks County will be able to expand, bringing additional jobs and revenue to Doylestown.
The grant, in the amount of $4.2m, will enable the biotech center to add 15 more laboratories on site, resulting in an anticipated 90 new jobs. The center currently employs 300 people. In addition to increasing the laboratory space available, grant funding will also be utilized to increase its emergency power capacity.
Facilities such as this biotech center can attract additional businesses and residents to Doylestown if the city works with its brochure printers to include this information in its promotional materials.
Partially funded by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center opened in August of 2006. According to the center’s website, it has continually added space since its opening and now provides space for more than three dozen companies. In its role as a starter home for early-stage life sciences companies, the center seeks to optimize the collaboration between commercial interests and nonprofit scientists in facilitating new ideas and discoveries.
Five for-profit life science enterprises have already made a commitment to leasing newly created laboratory space at the center: Cross Current Corp., Flow Metric Inc., Fox Chase Chemical Diversity Center Inc., Novira Therapeutics, Inc., and Synergy Pharmaceuticals.
