Lewis Center dentist wins recognition

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) recently held its 66th annual conference, at which it awarded the Aaron Gershkoff/Norman Goldberg Memorial Award to a Lewis Center dentist.

The award takes its name from the academy's first and second president, and recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the practice of implant dentistry.

Alfred “Duke” Heller, DDS, MS, FAAID, DABOI/ID, practices in Lewis Center. He founded the Midwest Implant Institute (MII), a facility where a large number of dentists have trained since 1980. The institute allows doctors in good standing with the dental board in their own state to bring their patients to the facility, and perform surgery on them at that location. After helping with implant placement, the doctors finish the procedures at their own offices.

While the doctors are at the facility, they are each required to assist seven implant procedures, and place seven themselves. By assisting in these procedures, the dentists see the correct procedure and how to place the implants, meaning results are predictable.

Dr. Heller was in practice for just over 50 years, 23 of which were Dr. Robert Heller, his son. The younger Heller is a prosthodontist who helps train the dentists who are attending MII.

Such honors can be helpful in marketing a facility like this, which could work with a brochure printing company to create booklets explaining the courses and requirements for attending.
