Portion of I-65 to bear Rick Mounts name

The portion of Interstate 65 that runs through Lebanon now carries the name ‘Rick Mount Highway’ in honor of the Lebanon-born basketball player.

Mount joined Matt Gentry (Lebanon’s Mayor), officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation, state Senator Phil Boots, and state Representative Tim Brown at a meeting of the Lebanon City Council on November 28. There, they unveiled Signs labeling the highway with Mount’s name. The section is the three-mile stretch from mile 138 to mile 141.

Mount was born and raised in Lebanon, and played basketball in high school, where he was seen as a standout player. In his senior year, he was voted Indiana’s ‘Mr. Basketball’. He went to Purdue University, where he was All-American three times. He remains the all-time leading scorer for the Boilermakers.

Mount went on to play professional basketball with the Indiana Pacers, the Kentucky Colonels, the Utah Stars, and finally, the Memphis Sounds. In school, he was known for his ability to score, but during his time in pro basketball, he also became recognized for his passing ability, and his free throws. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, and today, he runs “shoot camps” for high school players throughout the Midwest.

Events like this can be enhanced if organizers work with a poster printing company to create a sign to honor the recipient of the award.
