Memorial decision made by students of revamped school

Berry Intermediate School in Lebanon will be remodeled within the next year, and students currently attending want to leave a memorial to the school as it is now.

The new construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016, with work to be finished in time for the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.

The school, which houses fifth and sixth graders, will get new lighting, heating, flooring, furniture, ceilings, air conditioning, and technology. The industrial arts area, which is now outdated, will be razed, and an addition comprising 1,500 square feet will be added.

The substantial changes planned have led to the school's current students' desire to leave a memorial of their time in the building. They researched minerals and rocks to decide what would be the best material for the purpose.

Their research led them to choose granite for their monument, which was made by Dodds Monuments. The students paid for most of the work themselves, with Dodds literally ‘chipping’ in the rest.

Teacher Emily Jefferson took the lead on the project, explaining that part of her curriculum includes project-based instruction, where students work on real life projects to learn about them. She says that projects allow students to understand content in a real way, as opposed to a theoretical understanding.

School officials might like to work with a postcard printing company to create a card for Mailing to the community, describing the students' memorial.
