After discussing the issue for months, the Lebanon City Council voted to approve the continuing operations of the Cincinnati Scenic Railway, a tourist train.
Six of seven council members were present at the meeting this month, and voted unanimously to approve a contract allowing the train to operate for at least the next eight years.
Among other things, the agreement says that Lebanon will provide the train's operators with as much as $6,000 per year to help maintain the right-of-way, beginning in 2017. Some members of the council wanted the railroad to contribute more support for track maintenance, prompting Brian Collins, who owns the train, to consider pulling out of Lebanon entirely.
However, businesses in downtown Lebanon created a ‘Save the Train’ campaign, and a local philanthropic organization, the Harmon Civic Trust, agreed to charge admission for its ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ events.
The trust holds these activities in a field next to the train depot. Collins also thanked two council members, Matt Rodriguez; and Bill Kilimnick, who manages the Golden Lamb Inn, for helping to hammer out the agreement
Railway officials might consider working with a poster printing company to create colorful Posters advertising the train, to place throughout downtown. They could also contact a banner printing company to have Banners done to promote the train rides.
