Help for homeschoolers is on the way in Lebanon, especially as they take on tough STEAM subjects.
The acronym STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics—areas of study that can present a challenge for even the most experienced teachers. Now the library has stepped in to provide some assistance to people homeschooling their children, in the form of monthly activities.
This month, the activity will focus on using candy hearts to build various objects, including a wall, a boat, and a bridge. The constructed objects will then be tested to see if they will stand up to a series of challenges. This type of project reflects real-world situations faced by construction engineers, who, for example, are charged with building bridges that carry traffic safely, in all conditions, under ever-changing dynamic loads.
STEAM subjects are particularly important because they affect all other aspects of life, from the technology that supports the internet, to the mathematical calculations that are the foundation of many projects.
The event is designed for youngster from ages 8 to 15, and will be held at the Lebanon Public Library Story Time Room, February 18, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Candy hearts have no doubt been chosen as the material of choice because Valentine's Day is a few days before the workshop. Print shops can help provide the various materials necessary for workshops like this.
