The Encore Summer Youth Theatre is getting ready to present ‘Once on This Island’, which opens in just over a week’s time.
The play, which will open in Hamilton, at Parrish Auditorium at Miami University, will feature more than 60 young artists from the around the county, including the Lebanon area. Miami University is about 23 miles from Lebanon, and further information can be found on the theater’s website.
Encore Theatre has been working with students with ages ranging from those entering the seventh grade to those who have just graduated from high school. Encore also has a program that works with elementary school-age actors. The director of this production is Ben Schneider, who has been working with the younger students for four years. He describes his job this time as “a little surreal,” since he has seen these children grow up, turning from shy introverts to talented young performers.
The show centers on an arranged marriage and the ways cultural expectations influence such customs. ‘Once on This Island’ is from the same creative group that did ‘Seussical the Musical’. Becca Braun, who plays Andrea, the wife in the marriage, says she and her husband Daniel, played by Chase Engel, get along, but the marriage is more a business deal than anything else. Although they like each other well enough, complications arise when Daniel falls in love with another woman.
