The City of Lebanon recently announced that it is now taking applications for the upcoming 2019 Citizens Academy. This will be the first such event in Lebanon.
A citizens’ academy is designed to acquaint residents with their local government, and how it works. It is also hoped that understanding more about government functioning will create better communication between residents and various agencies, as well as increasing transparency.
Topics to be covered during the course include an introduction to local government; a public safety overview; services provided by the city; opportunities and challenges; financial matters; remaining informed and getting involved; and looking to the future. Courses like this can benefit if organizers work with Print shops to create appropriate material.
Citizens academies are becoming popular across the country, as are civilian police academies. In the latter, residents learn how their police department operates, with classes that may include things like legal concepts; crime scene processing; even a ride-along on a patrol. In all cases, the idea is to help increase residents' understanding of their local government's functions.
The course is comprised of four classes, each of which is 90 minutes long. They will meet on February 13 at the City Building located at 50 South Broadway; March 13 at the same location; April 10 at Electric Admin, located at 125 South Sycamore Street; and May 8 at the City Building. Each class will run from 6.30 pm until 8 pm.
