After it was purchased by Generative Growth in June, many questioned whether Marsh, one of Ohio's oldest supermarket chains, would stay open. Some stores, such as the one in Hamilton, have closed, but others were recently re-opened under a new name: Needler's Fresh Market.
As the name suggests, the rebranded stores will emphasize fresh and locally sourced produce, as well as items made in the in-store deli and bakery. The name comes from Michael Needler, a partner in Generative Growth and co-owner of the new chain along with his sister Julie Anderson.
The new name will grace Flyers, Business Cards, and Letterheads. Revamped advertising material will focus on what Anderson described as "a clean, fresh look." Generative Growth's rebranding seems designed to capitalize on the growing interest in local and artisanal food.
At its height in the early 2000s, the Marsh chain owned 120 locations across Ohio and Indiana. However, after an acquisition by Sun Capital Partners in 2006, Marsh gradually shuttered most of its stores, including the Hamilton location that had been open since 1967.
While the Hamilton store remains closed, locations in Middletown, Eaton and Troy have already reopened under the new name. The renamed chain contains 14 stores across Ohio and Indiana. With the new marketing is a suggestion of a new start for a once-beleaguered business.
