Creation of Smart traffic signal system moving ahead

The city of Hamilton has decided to go forward with the upgrade of 97 traffic signals at a cost of $5.25 million to better facilitate traffic flow throughout the city.

The city will only have to provide $1.05m of the funding; the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments will provide the remaining $4.2m.

The project’s design should be completed by Summer 2021 bid out by late 2021. From there, it will take 18-24 months to accomplish, according to Rich Engle, Hamilton Director of Engineering.

The Spooky Nook Sports Champion Mill is anticipated to draw between 10,000 and 20,000 visitors to its sports complex and convention center on some weekends. Spooky Nook is expected to open in December 2021, well before the traffic signal upgrade takes place.

Banner printing services are often called upon well in advance of a new business opening, sometimes even before construction begins, to drum up excitement for the eventual opening.

The new traffic signal system will provide video detection capabilities to the city’s 97 traffic lights. Cameras attached to the traffic signals will enable the system to ‘see’ intersection traffic build up and the signals can, in some instances, make their own adjustments to improve traffic flow.

Other improvements will be fiber communication upgrades and new controllers complete with battery backup. Americans with Disabilities Act compliant handicap ramps will also be constructed.
