A Hamilton high school student, Kendyl Roberts, recently competed in her first international event and earned herself a world championship title.
The 17-year-old Badin High School junior had already competed throughout America, earning over two dozen gold medals in the process. World Karate Championships took her to Cluj-Napoca, Romania where she took home a gold medal in a type of karate called Sai, where short sword weapons are used. All together she competed in three events; one of which, Style Specifics Kata, Roberts earned a fourth place.
A banner printing service is used by schools, municipalities and other entities to congratulate winning competitors and brag just a little on their behalf.
Roberts, who lives with her family in Liberty Township in Butler County, is 4 feet 10 inches and due to her size no longer takes part in karate fighting competitions. However, her size does not affect her performance of karate styles such as sword wielding.
She works at least two hours per day, four days a week training at the West Chester Township Shito-Kai Ohio. Roberts credits Alex Dell, her sensei or karate instructor with much of her success.
A spokesperson for Baden High Schools, Dirk Allen said that all the championship was not related to the school, the “Baden family” was proud of her and proud to have her represent the United States.
