New recreation options coming to Fairfield's Marsh Park

Fairfield officials want to expand the spots visitors to Marsh Park can use to fish, and are thinking of allowing non-motorized boats onto the lake.

However, Tiphanie Howard, the director of Fairfield Parks and Recreation, said there are still some obstacles in the way before these boats can take to the water. One of the biggest hurdles is the lack of spaces to launch the craft. Marsh Park does have a ramp, but it is only used for access in emergencies. In addition, the ramp is so steep it would be impossible to for anyone to use it to get a non-motorized boat into the water.

When city officials give the go-ahead to allow boating on the lake, they still need to discuss the rules, if any, that will be put on patrons of the park. These may include limiting the area of the lake accessible to non-motorized boats, or charging a fee. Non-motorized boats are able to access the entire lake, which can pose difficulties. Staff members have discussed restricting boats to the lake's southern end, where someone can watch them, to make sure they do not get into trouble. However, Howard says it will require buoys and Signs to set the limits, something under discussion currently.

A decision on whether to expand boating on the lake could be made as soon as the Memorial Day weekend. Officials can use poster printing to create the necessary signage.
