Fairfield County Veterans Services, which is currently located on Main Street in Fairfield, will be moving soon to a new location just north of the city in the Greenfield Center.
The new space features bright red letters identifying the office and making it easy to see. The office helps vets apply for the federal benefits to which they are entitled, and when necessary, gives them emergency help with rent and food. The director hopes that the new space will be more visible and thus more accessible to those who need its services.
The county's Veterans Service Commission owns the downtown building that currently houses the agency, which meant it did not have to pay rent. However, the building had little privacy, and parking was difficult.
The new space eliminates those problems by making parking easy, and by having individual offices available where vets can talk about emotional and financial issues in private, with specialists who can help them. There is also a computer room, which will be of use because the Department of Veterans Affairs is asking vets to fill out Forms online. Some veterans do not have computers, and many older vets have trouble using them.
Once the office is up and running, officials could work with a postcard printing company to create cards to mail to area vets, advising them of the move and describing the services the office can offer.
