Killer comedy comes to Fairfield

A wry twist on a classic tale will be presented in Fairfield soon.

The Fairfield Footlighters have scheduled their production of “Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery,” an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's most popular story, “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” The clever play largely follows the plot of the original, which will be familiar to many theater audiences.

In the story, a friend of the Baskerville family asks Sherlock Holmes to protect the heir to the Baskerville fortune from the family curse. Holmes agrees, meets the young man, Sir Henry Baskerville, and sends Dr. Watson to the moors with him as a bodyguard, secretly following. The frightening “hound of hell” is loose, and it is up to Holmes and Watson to save Sir Henry and find the would-be murderer.

There have been several film versions of the story, and television adaptations as well, so the identity of the murderer will probably surprise few. What is fun about this version of the story is the demands placed on the cast, where five actors use quick changes and clever set design to play over 40 different characters. In addition, mistaken identity, disguises, comic accents, and too many clues add to the comedy.

“A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” will have six performances: November 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 8:00 pm, and November 15 and 22 at 2.00 pm. Poster printing is often successfully use to publicize events like this.
