In 2015, Fairfield will become the second city in Ohio to get an all fiber optic network.
Cincinnati Bell plans to install the fiber-optics as a replacement for its copper network. The price tag for the new network is $200m.
According to Josh Pichler, a spokesman for the phone company, Fairfield and Bethel, which is the only Ohio city currently in the scheme, were chosen because they have a wide range of businesses in varied fields. Pichler says at present, Cincinnati Bell has about 40% of the region covered with fiber optics, and he hopes to have that figure increased to 75% by the end of 2016.
Businesses have been told about the changes, and Pichler says they will notice the effects quickly. They will have greater bandwidth, faster speeds, and easier internet access, which is vital as they start to use more cloud-based applications. The network will also allow businesses to give their employees more flexibility, as they can easily work from remote locations on phones and tablets.
In addition, the fiber optic network makes the city more attractive to businesses, who may locate there to take advantage of the new system.
Commercial users are not the only ones to benefit though, as residential customers will see faster connection speeds as well.
Fairfield officials might want to work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents and businesses, explaining the changes and the benefits of the new network.
