Fairfield plans to renovate cemetery

Miami Chapel Cemetery, which has been closed since 1950, is set to receive a number of upgrades, including new fencing, stone pillars, and a new stone archway.

The Fairfield cemetery holds the graves of four veterans of the Civil War, and one Revolutionary War soldier, as well as being the resting place of early settlers.

Fairfield will ask for proposals from contractors to build a stone arch, complete with stone pillars, as well as a wrought iron fence to surround the property. At present, the cemetery is bordered by a chain-link fence. Jim Bell, who is the director of Fairfield's parks, said the improvements are expected to cost about $30,000. After the city chooses a contractor, work is likely to take approximately two weeks.

Bell said Miami Chapel is the second-oldest cemetery in Fairfield, and that honoring the pioneers and the veterans of two wars is the ‘right thing to do’. He also said honoring them is in actuality honoring the past of the entire community, and saving it for future generations to explore. According to Butler County historian Tom Stander, the Symmes Burial Ground is the oldest cemetery in Fairfield.

City officials might work with a brochure printing company to create Booklets about the cemetery and the veterans, and have them available at the site, or at other places in town at which visitors could find them.
