Fairfield offers walking winter tree ID workshop

Knowing how to properly identify a tree species can be a helpful skill for both the professional and home horticulturist, and Fairfield residents will soon have the chance to brush up on their skills.

While identifying trees in the summer may not be difficult, it is often a lot harder to do so in the winter when many of them shed their leaves. Attendees in the Winter Tree ID walking workshop will gain hands-on experience, and this free activity is open to all ages.

The group will go for a walk in Creekside Park, and as they go, the facilitators will point offer tips for determining the species based on their winter appearance. Characteristics such as bud size shape and placement, bark, branching, and also a tree’s overall silhouette in the landscape will be discussed.

The morning session will last one hour and is being offered as part of the city’s Let’s Go Hiking series, which combines getting active with learning about nature.

One of the tasks often undertaken by a community's recreation department is planning activities for a local area. A brochure printing company can craft mailers to send out to households to keep them informed about what is on offer for them in their own hometown.

This introduction to the challenges of identifying winter trees will be running on Saturday, December 7. It will start at 10:00 am.
