The firefly species found in Fairfield are really a species of beetle that uses bioluminescence to communicate and attract a mate, and these “insect illuminators” will be the stars of the show for a family friendly firefly hunt.
Fairfield’s Harbin Park will be visited by those who sign up for the activity that will search for fireflies. The attendees are asked to gather at the Stone Shelter at the top of the park’s hill, and a trained facilitator will guide the experience.
The group will hit the park’s trail at dusk, and the route followed will be short and gentle. Metro Parks educators will share their knowledge of fireflies and their life cycle, including how and why they light up. Everyone will find out how they can create an environment that welcomes them to their own backyard, and it's free for the public to take part. The session will run for one hour.
Learning about nature can be fun for all ages, and many really enjoy doing so. Handouts such as basic field guides can be prepared for an activity by area Stationery printers.
Harbin Park will be welcoming this introduction to fireflies on June 20th. While advance registration is not necessary, everyone is asked to arrive at the meeting point by no later than 8:30 pm, and the contact number for the organizers is 513-867-5348.
