The Canton City schoolboard has appointed Ida Ross-Freeman to the Joint Recreation District's board, and reappointed John Rinaldi to the same organization.
Ross-Freeman will replace Nadine McIlwain-Massey, who left the board earlier in 2014, but whose term expired on December 31 in any case. She will serve for five years.
Rinaldi's case is different, however. In March, he was chosen to replace Eric Resnick, but Resnick refused to leave, saying he was not compelled to do so because his term was not expired, according to an article on CantonRep.com.
Documentation of the appointments made by the schoolboard was not clear as to whether Resnick was serving out his own term, or the remainder of a previous member's appointment. When McIlwain-Massey left, there was room for both Resnick and Rinaldi to serve, but the schoolboard has now decisively said it wants Rinaldi in the seat.
Traditionally a quiet process, the issues encountered during these most recent appointments are due in part to the fact that in 2013, Canton voters approved a three-year, $4m levy for the Canton Park Department, which will merge with the recreation board. The two boards have control over millions of taxpayer dollars.
