The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum will hold a special event this March highlighting Canton’s tradition of concert bands as part of its sesquicentennial celebrations.
The event will be titled “Music to Our Ears: The Grand Army Band to the Canton Concert Band” and is part of the Museum’s Soup at Six series. The library’s Director of Education Ally Carson will lead a discussion of Stark County’s musical history during the turn of the 20th century. Educational events like this often use methods like audio-visual displays and brochure printing to help communicate information in different ways.
This history includes the intersection of music and political campaigns, the Canton-based “March King” that rivaled Sousa and the birth of the still-extant Canton Concert Band. The lecture and audio-visual presentation will also include food and drink, including the eponymous soup with bread and dessert. Proceeds will go towards continuing the Museum’s programming.
The talk is part of the McKinney Presidential Library & Museum’s year-long efforts to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence, with March’s programming specifically focused on American musical traditions. Future scheduled events in the monthly “Soup at Six” series include “The Freedom Train, Steam of Democracy” and “Stories of the Sky.”
“Music to our Ears” will take place at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum in Canton on the evening of March 19.
