Gala ball recalls World War II

An upcoming event in Canton will recreate the Big Band era of the Second World War, thanks to the efforts of a group of local Boy Scouts.

The 5th Ranger BTN, Co B/Venture Crew 1944 is a group of Boy Scouts who enjoy learning about military history. The battalion is sponsored by MAPS Air Museum, and the Scouts are the hosts for the Second Annual Christmas Truce Ball. The event is a gala celebration that includes dinner, the music of the 1940s played by the Moonlight Serenaders Big Band, door prizes, dancing, and a cash bar. The band is a 23-piece ensemble that promises to play for at least two hours, delivering the big band sound that was popular during the War.

The “truce” refers to the fact that informal ceasefires sometimes occurred between enemy troops. The most famous were during World War I, when virtually the entire Western Front celebrated Christmas, with troops from both sides crossing no-man’s-land to meet and exchange greetings. A much smaller truce occurred during the Second World War. Brochure printing can be used to create informative programs for events like this.

Dress for the evening is formal, with Class A WWII uniforms encouraged for anyone who has one. Other options are an outfit from the 1940s, a current military uniform, or formal business attire. The Christmas Truce Ball is set for December 18, starting at 5:00pm. The venue is the La Pizzeria Restaurant & Banquet Hall on Dressler Road NW.
