Fiber arts exhibit to open in Canton

The Malone Art Gallery (MAG) in Canton is now featuring an exhibit entitled ‘Fiber Arts of Ohio’.

The exhibition features work by alumni of the fiber arts program at Malone, as well as other Ohio fiber artists.

Fiber art works are those projects made by using synthetic or natural fiber, as well as other materials like yarn or fabric. This type of art focuses on the labor used by the artist to create the work, as well as the materials themselves. Together, the labor and materials are part of the significance of the work, which is more concerned with aesthetics than whether or not the work is useful.

Among those exhibiting are Clare Murray Adams, Michele Waalkes, Priscilla Roggenkamp, and Libby Bracy Doss. Adams' early works focused on surface design and fibers, but she now works with encaustic paint, found object construction, and collage. Waalkes bases her work on photographs, which she often then transfers onto fabric and other materials; Roggenkamp began with two-dimensional projects and now works in 3-D; and Doss is active in arts throughout Stark County.

The gallery is in Canton, at 2600 Cleveland Avenue N.W., and the exhibit runs through October 8 having opened yesterday. The gallery is open during normal business hours, and is free to the public at all times.

Gallery management might work with brochure printers to create a booklet about the exhibit.
