Singer/songwriter, actor and musician Dwight Yoakam first rose to fame when he brought his style under the umbrella of “country music.” At the time Yoakam began his career, the most popular type of country music was a genre influenced strongly by pop. It was sometimes called “urban cowboy” music, referring to the successful film of the same name and its popular soundtrack. Yoakam played honky-tonk.
Honky-tonk music was first defined as a type of piano playing. It was related to the ragtime genre but put more emphasis on rhythm than harmony or melody. In the 1950s, honky-tonk moved beyond piano and was played by country greats like Hank Williams, George Jones, and Ray Price. Yoakam revitalized this genre and began his rise to popularity in the 1980s.
Now, he has more than 20 compilations and albums to his credit and has put more than 30 songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. In addition, he has sold over 30 million records, including nine Platinum, including the Triple Platinum “This Time.”
A review says:
“Yoakam performed with an energy that can only come from truly being immersed in the music. Playing guitar, singing, and dancing on stage, Yoakam had the crowd cheering . . . “Encore!”
