Canton okays open containers downtown

On April 25, the Canton City Council voted unanimously to create a downtown open container district.

The vote came after a public hearing during which several people spoke in favor of the measure, saying it would appeal to young professionals. There were no speakers opposed to the ruling. From here, the state will need to approve Canton's application and issue the necessary permits, which could take as long as four weeks.

Drinks that are to be consumed outside will be served in 16-ounce, to-go plastic cups, which will cost an extra $1 each. Only those who pay the surcharge will be allowed to take their drinks with them.

People will be able to carry open drinks outside all year, from noon until midnight every day. However, new Signs will be posted reminding people where the boundaries of the district are located. The area is downtown, and includes almost 30 qualified establishments, mostly in the Canton Arts District, and along Cleveland and Market avenues.

In addition, there will be extra police officers patrolling the district on weekends, and businesses will be required to pick up any litter generated near their stores. Participation in the measure is optional, for both visitors and businesses in the district.

Canton businesses that decide to participate could work with poster printing companies to create Posters for their windows, indicating that they are taking part in the open container measure.
