Canton educator performs classroom heroics

People in Canton are calling Kara Rankin a superhero for saving a student’s life

Rankin, a 27-year veteran of the Canton school system, says she was taking attendance one morning when she heard a scream from an adjoining classroom. Rankin went to the room, where a substitute teacher was working, and found a student on the floor, in the middle of a seizure.

She had the substitute take the class back to her room, then made certain the student was lying on his side so he would not choke on anything. She phoned the principal, and watched him carefully, as it seemed the seizure was easing.
When the student failed to respond to being shook when his body went limp, Rankin began CPR, using chest compressions. She estimates she did ten to thirteen compressions before the student exhaled, and started to regain his color. By then, other people were in the room.

Paramedics with the Canton Fire Department said they were grateful for Rankin's assistance, and added that she saved the student’s life. School principal Marianna Arvidson praised Rankin, as did the student’s parents.

School officials could use this incident to stress the importance of knowing CPR. They could work with the fire department to create Brochures for Mailing to residents about CPR so that they know how to act should such a situation occur.
