Canton company to make radial engines

A local Canton business, Radial Engine Innovations (REI), has teamed up with Mentor-based Fredon Corporation to build nine radial engine prototypes.

The engines could be used in many different machines, and if the prototypes are successful, this could herald an increase in the number of jobs in the region.

All the engines have been built to federal specifications and meet the government regulations for increasing fuel efficiency and cutting emissions, particularly in large vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.

Mitchell Boulton, President and Founder of REI, said the company should have the prototypes completed before the end of the year. He says he hopes REI can go from making prototypes into full engine production, since the transition would allow the company to build a factory in the region, a project that would bring as many as 250 manufacturing positions with it.

In September, REI and Fredon agreed to work together to build the prototypes, with the latter company providing precision forging and casting. For much of the first half of the 20th Century, until commercial jets arrived, most aircrafts were powered by radial engines. Boulton has worked redesigning these engines, making them cleaner and more efficient.

The nine prototypes have already been allocated. Three will go to handcrafted custom motorcycles, three others will be used to operate multi-function generators, while the final three are earmarked for what the company calls a ‘super truck program’.
