A plan to fund the renovation of Memorial Field in Mount Vernon has been approved by the Westchester Board of Legislators. Lawmakers have approved $29m to renovate this field, which has been in disrepair for over 10 years.
Shawyn Patterson-Howard, mayor of Mount Vernon, said that this field is the jewel of the city, where it once housed the football field, the stadium, the track, and tennis courts for the city and hosted many community events. He added that some people do not realize that it has been closed for 10 years.
Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of such projects that are to get underway.
Funding in the amount of $20m will come from the county and another $5m from the state. There will be a track, tennis courts, a football field, a new skate park, and soccer fields once the renovations at Memorial Park are completed. There will also be a grandstand that will new lights and a new sound systems and be able to hold 4,000 people. Residents of Mt. Kisco will want to take advantage of the many recreational opportunities at the park.
George Latimer, Westchester County Executive, said that this project will enable many people to get to work and help to put money back into the economy. The park could open as early as next year.
