An information session regarding the Rewarding Potential Scholarship for Fox Lane High School students who want to attend college was recently held at the Mt. Kisco Public Library. Success stories of scholarship students and the mission of the steering committee were covered in the session.
This program funds college scholarships for these students and was started in the fall of 2014 with seed money of $50,000 from the Bedford Presbyterian Church, after its pastor, Paul Alcorn, heard of a student who was homeless. The community then raised funds to be able to send him to a college in Maine.
The program is designed to help students from lower-income backgrounds to overcome the financial barriers that may prevent them from going to college, and enables them to be able to do so. In the spring of 2015, three students were awarded $20,000, which has now become a recurring annual scholarship. In total, 12 students have received $345,000 as a result of the program.
Alcorn commented that it was very satisfying to hear the stories of the successful graduates and how much the scholarship has changed their lives.
Poster printing companies can be hired to create a variety of items that can be displayed throughout town, so people will know where they can make donations to contribute to such scholarships.
