Bridge construction to help withstand weather damage

The Saw Mill River Parkway, near the town line between New Castle and Mt. Kisco, will be undergoing a project at the cost of just over $17m to help control flooding and road closures.

The bridge over the Kisco River will be replaced, as well as the channel over Branch Brook. The work is part of the Empire Bridge program in the state, which is projected to cost $542m and designed to replace 100 bridges. The project is to start this month and to be completed by the end of the year. The result will be a wider and higher bridge with new bridge rails, guard rails, and concrete median.

The first phase of the work will run between April and July on the northbound lanes and the second phase between July and December on the southbound lanes. Detours will be necessary at times and there might be additional closures at night.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said that as there is now more extreme and unpredictable weather, it is a good time to strengthen essential parkways and bridges across New York so as to be better able to resist future bad weather events.
