Birding activities to welcome winter in Mt. Kisco area

The Third Thursday’s Bird Walk of December will be hosted by the Bedford Audubon this month. Residents of nearby Mt. Kisco looking for some brisk exercise and the enjoyment of nature might be interested in this event.

This Bird Walk falls on the Winter Solstice and marks both the shortest day of the year and the first day of winter. Tait Johansson, a naturalist, will lead the walk in the area of the Cross River Reservoir of Katonah. Along the walk, attendees will be looking for winter birds, such as Common Mergansers on the reservoir, and some songbirds still lingering such as the Eastern Towhee of the Hermit Thrush. A bald eagle may also be seen.

This walk will be on Thursday December 21, beginning at 7:30am. There is no charge for the walk, and it is expected to be an easy walk. Such events like this that can bring a community together are often promoted throughout a region with banner printing.

The Bedford Audubon is also holding its Christmas Bird Count. This community science program of the National Audubon Society relies on volunteers on one calendar day during the year to go out over a period of 24 hours to count birds. Those who are novices are paired with more experienced bird counters. It is anticipated that this will be an activity that will be enjoyed by everyone. There will be a bird count in Putnam County on Tuesday, January 2.
