Merrick student writer recognized nationally
Alixandra Wilens of the Merrick School District has won the Scholastic Gold Medal for her submission of a compilation of previous work. Only eight students across the country were awarded the medal in 2017.
The creative student's portfolio included a collection of poems, newspaper articles, and short stories and essays she had completed over the last few years. These works have drawn attention to her in the past and helped to her earn regional attention as well.
As class valedictorian for 2017, Wilens works hard to reach her goals. The student also is co-editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, was named as a National Merit Commended Student, and is in several national honor societies.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a competition that is open to all students in grades K-12. The award ceremony is scheduled for June 8 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Wilens will receive a $10,000 college scholarship in addition to the national recognition. A record number of entries were received this past year, with over 330,000 artworks considered by the judges.
This national recognition makes the level of talent available in Merrick obvious and, with printed word as powerful as ever, it is important for all local businesses to take the time to find talented writers to help them produce professional brochures, catalogs, and other printed readable items.
