Student express themselves in poetry performance

The library of the Berner Middle School, located in the Massapequa Park school district, was recently the setting for the inaugural Poetry Slam.

A group of 13 students from the school shared their writing and voices with an audience filled with students, teachers, and parents. Inspired by a theme of ‘Life is Too Short Not to Speak’, the students reminded the audience that poetry lives inside everyone as they shared their perspectives on issues such as love, friendship, and the influence of society on their growth.

Teacher Mr. Kemnitzer introduced the students by saying that he has been a witness to the growth of the writers. They are expressing their true voices, which made the audience both laugh and cry with their poetry.

Mrs. Audiino, an English teacher at both the Middle School and Massapequa High School, was the advisor for the Poetry Slam Club over the past year. The students have been meeting several times a week since October to create and work with each other to perfect their performances.

Mrs. Audiino commented that she felt privileged to have worked with these industrious students. They still have a passion for poetry and their friendships have become lasting outside of the group.

Since they are already planning for next year’s event, a flyer printing companies might be able to help them publicize more information about their plans.
