Old Bethpage Village, just outside of Massapequa Park, will become the home of the United States Military Armor Museum with its armored personnel carriers, tanks and anti-aircraft weapons juxtaposed to dozens of historic buildings from the 1850s that have been arranged to resemble a village on Long Island during that time.
The 209-acre park was purchased by Nassau County on the 1960s to create the Old Bethpage Village Restoration with 50 homes, churches and businesses from before the Civil War that were moved to the site and restored along with a working farm of seven acres.
According to Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, the village has attracted more people over the years but has at the same time run into financial difficulties. It is hoped that ticket sales from the Armor Museum will help pay for the general maintenance and upkeep of the buildings, whose operating costs have increased.
The museum will be located near the entrance of the Village in a new building, 250,000 square feet in size. It will also have re-enactments and other demonstrations so as to feature its fleet of vehicles turned on and going through the village.
Flyer printing will be most likely be used to inform people of the addition to the village and generate enthusiasm for the new museum and the village as well.
