A new Dairy Queen has opened in Huntington, in Suffolk County, becoming the third DQ restaurant on Long Island and the first in Suffolk County.
The restaurant is not the traditional fast-food franchise, but follows the new ‘Grill & Chill’ concept, which went into operation in 2001.
These restaurants go beyond the frozen dessert concept for which the company is known; they include table delivery, and hot food items such as chicken sandwiches, burgers, sides, salads, and various “melts”--stuffed flour tortillas. One of its signature dishes is a half-pound hamburger called the ‘Flamethrower’. The chain still offers its full menu of cones, cups, shakes, sundaes, and Blizzards for dessert.
The other two Dairy Queens on Long Island, which are in Massapequa and Levittown, also follow the ‘Grill & Chill’ model.
The first Dairy Queen franchise opened in Joliet, Illinois, in 1940, after a father-and-son team from Kankakee, Illinois, came up with the frozen concoction. Today, Dairy Queen has more than 6,000 locations around the world.
The owners of the new eatery might consider working with a flyer printing company on a handout for distribution near the new location. New diners often include a coupon for a free menu item, or a reduced-price meal, to interest customers who have never patronized the store in the past.
