Huntington teen wins scholarship

A sixth grader from Huntington has won a scholarship from an acclaimed arts camp.

The Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts has awarded Josephine Sullivan a “Uniquely U” scholarship. Sullivan competed with hundreds of others throughout the New York City area to win the honor. The scholarship competition is open to young people in second through twelfth grade, who are required to make a video that shows samples of their creative arts projects. They also explain what makes them stand out from other artistic hopefuls.

Five separate scholarships were awarded in various arts disciplines. Madeline Lee from Syosset won in Creative Writing; Aissatou Bah from the Bronx won a scholarship in Dance; a Music scholarship went to Akari Hunte from Brooklyn; and Shivani Rao from Smithtown will study Visual Art. Sullivan’s scholarship will enable her to study Theater. Organizations like this can use brochure printing to explain the courses available, as well as the type and extent of the programs they offer.

The arts camp is a seven-week course of study in various artistic disciplines. Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts’ executive director, Lauren Brandt Schloss, says she and the staff were inspired by the submissions they received this year. She added that the sincerity and authenticity the applicants displayed makes the camp organizers excited about the upcoming camp season, and she hopes creative young people will use their gifts to change the world for the better.
