Huntington schedules film screening to raise funds

A councilwoman in Huntington has arranged for a special showing of a film to help raise money for Huntington veterans.

Joan Cergol is partnering with the Town of Huntington to screen “Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero,” which will be shown at the Cinema Arts Center on Park Avenue. The family-friendly movie is animated, and based on the true story of Stubby, a canine who served with American troops in the First World War. Organizers of events like this can use banner printing to create great decorations for the theater.

Stubby was rescued by a United States soldier, who found the pooch on the New Haven, Connecticut, streets. The soldier was deployed to France, and Stubby went with him. The dog served in the trenches with the troops, where he saved many lives. Among his exploits, he was able to warn his unit about an impending gas attack; he even captured a German soldier.

The film was released last year, and Cergol heard about it via the American Legion Auxiliary. When she learned that VetFlicks screens films around the country, she went to see the film, then determined to bring Stubby to Huntington. Proceeds from the screening will go to support the America Legion and its programs for veterans; money will also go to VetDogs, an organization that provides guide dogs to service members.

Stubby will be presented on May 4. Doors open at 9:00 am, and the movie starts at 10:00 am. Admission is $5.
