Frederick Giachetti, a Huntington resident, has dreams of owning and operating his own vineyard. According to a May 29, 2015 news item, Giachetti would like to open a winery in Northport, on 10 acres of land that is currently the site of an abandoned farmhouse. The property is at 29 Norwood Road, and according to Zillow, is located close to Crab Meadow Golf Course.
Giachetti believes his operation could benefit the entire community. For example, it would provide educational opportunities for students attending the nearby Norwood Avenue Elementary School.
Before he can start planting grapes, however, Giachetti has to go through a long approval process. First, he will need to have the entire Suffolk County Legislature vote on his application, which has to be included in the New York State Agricultural District program. Then the Huntington Town Hall will have to approve both his site plan, and give him the allowances he needs to be able to make wine. Small vineyard operators and craft beer makes are becoming increasingly popular today.
Giachetti might consider working with brochure printers on a booklet that describes his proposed wine-making operation in detail, including such things as the types of wines he plans to make, and what benefits he sees to the community from the operation of the winery. He could make the booklet available to Huntington and Northport residents.
