Huntington considers buying property

Huntington officials are pondering buying as much as 2.5 acres of land in East Northport, adjacent to William Byrne Park.

Huntington's Environmental Open Space and Park Fund Review Advisory Committee has been considering this property since 1999. A representative of the property owner sent a letter to the committee, indicating there was a seller potentially interested in selling parts of two wooded lots.

After receiving the letter, the committee recommended the purchase. The land would be used to expand William Byrne Park, which is located on Clay Pitts Road. If the town decides to go ahead and buy the land, an appraisal will be performed so that a purchase price can be set.

Among the amenities of the park currently is a playground with two distinct areas (one for older children and one for younger kids), three tennis courts, an enclosed area suitable for sports such as street hockey and rollerblading, and softball and baseball fields.

Huntington residents are encouraged to discuss the matter at a public meeting. The town board will convene today, July 12, at 2:00 pm, and residents are invited to attend and express their opinions. The town hall is at 100 Main Street.
