What's Happening in Huntington, NY…

The Dr. Samuel Teich House bears a marker because of its historic importance; now the Town of Huntington is considering adding another name to the designation—that of Teich's wife, Beatrice.

Dr. Teich was a physician in Huntington from 1935 until 1985. He delivered many residents of Huntington, and during that time, his wife worked alongside him. Robert Hughes, the Huntington Town historian, said Beatrice continued to be heavily involved in running the practice until she passed away in 2008. Historic structures like this can benefit if those responsible for their care use brochure printing to create informative materials for visitors.

After the designation had been decided upon, family members asked the officials to reconsider, and change the designation to the “Dr. & Mrs. Samuel Teich House.” However, since the change means the town code will have to be changed, a hearing is necessary.

Hughes says that he is the author of the report that led to the designation in the first place, and adds that he's aware of the unfortunate tendency to overlook women's contributions to history. He said that he referred to the building as the “Dr. Samuel Teich House,” and the name stuck. Hughes adds that it's a shame Beatrice didn't get the credit she deserves, since she not only raised the couple's children, she helped Dr. Teich run his practice, and contributed fully as much to the community as he did.
