The Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington will be the place to be soon, when film historian Irene Eckert screens the 1961 comedy ‘Divorce Italian Style’, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Stefania Sandrelli.
The film was directed by Pietro Germi, is put together in the ‘commedia all'italiana’ or Italian-style comedy genre, and won the Academy Award in 1963 for best story, screenplay, and writing.
The plot is centered on Ferdinando Cefalù (Mastroianni), a married man who develops a relationship with another woman in an era during which divorce was not legal. In order to get away from his wife, he devises a complex plan to get her involved with another man, catch them together, and commit murder, claiming he has done so to preserve his honor. He knows he will receive a light sentence for the crime, and then can be with his true love.
The idea that someone would have to commit murder to get out of a relationship uses extreme situations and ridicule to point out the problems inherent in trying to legislate human behavior.
The screening will take place Monday, October 18, at 7:30 pm. Eckert will introduce the film, show it, and then lead a discussion of the movie's cultural significance.
